Extended Paper

This assignment (minimum 1500 words, submitted via email) builds on our Short Papers, and you are welcome to take writing directly from those assignments as relevant. For the Extended Paper, address one of the following prompts:

  • Pick some aspect of or example from digital culture and analyze it through the lens of Aristotle, Burke, and Bogost. How would we understand this example from the different perspectives of our rhetoricians? How do these different perspectives compare? Through your work, we should get a new perspective on our rhetoricians and/or this example from digital culture by looking at them all together. You are welcome to look at an example you already discussed in a Short Paper.
  • Pick three aspects of or examples from digital culture and analyze them through the lens of one of our rhetoricians: Aristotle, Burke, or Bogost (only one of them). You should pick examples that allow us to consider different aspects of the rhetorician’s thinking. How do these different examples highlight different aspects of this understanding of rhetoric? Through your work, we should get a new perspective on this rhetorician’s thinking and/or these examples from digital culture by looking at them all together. You are welcome to look at examples you already discussed in a Short Paper.

MLA/APA
Your paper should be formatted either as an MLA or APA paper, and you should include an MLA or APA citation for the sources you incorporate. This resource can help us cite class handouts.

AI
The default expectation is that you are not using AI on our assignments this semester. If you are going to grow and develop as a writer, you are better off doing the work yourself, even if there are aspects of our assignments you find challenging. Working through the challenge makes for better learning. If you use AI in any way as you work on an assignment, you should note this in your assignment submission, explaining how you used it.
