This assignment (minimum 1800 words, submitted via email) combines and extends on the Publication Analysis and Publication Comparison assignments. You are welcome to draw directly on the writing from those assignments to complete the Extended Analysis. The main prompts from the previous assignments still apply:
- What is the purpose of the publication? What does it aim to achieve?
- What type of articles or other content does it publish? How does this content reflect the larger purpose of the publication? Point to specific examples.
- Looking at the comparison publication, what do the publications have in common? In what ways are they similar in their purpose, their content, and/or their audience?
- What sets the publications apart? In what ways are they different in their purpose, their content, and/or their audience?
- What are the relative strengths (and perhaps limits) of each publication? What makes each successful or interesting?
The Extended Analysis can build on this work in a few different ways. First, depending on how thorough you are in your earlier work, you can likely bring in more examples – you can analyze other articles or other content from your main publication and/or the comparison publication. Whether or not you bring in more examples, you should address some combination of the following prompts to conclude your paper:
- What have you learned about the publication through your analysis and research work?
- Why is the publication important or significant? Why should we be interested in it? What does this publication add to the larger landscape of similar publications?
