English 504: Composition Theory

This course approaches the recent history of rhetoric and composition through the theoretical foundations that have shaped different understandings of the writing process, the writing/rhetorical situation, and the writing/rhetorical subject. Through studying these foundations and recent developments, we will aim first to understand rhetorical and composition theory and the pedagogies they make available and then to articulate our own theoretical perspectives and pedagogies. While this class is not designed to prepare students specifically for teaching in composition classrooms, our work will aim to bridge the theoretical and the practical, and we will ultimately be concerned with the possibilities for exploring and embodying these perspectives in pedagogical practices.
